The Roxbury Arts Group’s third annual Essential Thursdays summer program kicks off with “Strings & Bows,” a rousing, eclectic evening of music at the scenic Old School Baptist Church in Denver-Vega Valley. On hand will be “food truck of distinction” Ate.O.Ate Catering, bringing locally-sourced edibles to be enjoyed in the moonlight. Visit ateoatecatering.com for the evening’s menu choices.
All of the composers represented in “Strings & Bows” were innovators of their time. The first section of the program features two distinct early Mozart pieces and Beethoven’s renowned Trio in C Minor; the second half features American jazz innovator Scott Joplin, modern gypsy music by Ljova, tangos by the great innovator Astor Piazzolla, and Beethoven’s “Duet with Two Eyeglasses,” written by the young composer to be played with a nearsighted cellist friend.
“Strings & Bows” is the creation of three acclaimed classical musicians, brought together by RAG for the first time. Cellist Miho Zaitsu, who recently debuted at Carnegie Hall, has toured the U.S., Europe, and Asia, and regularly performs at Lincoln Center, Symphony Space, and the United Nations; violist Miranda Sielaff has played Le Poisson Rouge and Carnegie Hall and toured with the Lucerne Festival Academy; violinist Lisa Tipton is co-founder of the award winning Meridian String Quartet, has toured internationally, and has held residencies at Queens College, Bard College, and the Yale at Norfolk Summer Festival.
