The works in this exhibition are an exploration of memory and what it means to remember, as well as an index of what is left when someone is lost.

Exhibiting artist Kevin Q. Gray’s mother died from cancer in 2011, and for four years he found himself unable to open and re-investigate the contents of a large antique chest where she had placed the various, most prized possession from throughout her life. His relationship with her was complicated during his adulthood, but one thing they always shared was a love for the outdoors and particularly, waterfalls. The wet-plate tintypes in this exhibition depict objects from within the chest, photographed in the site-specific location of Plattekill Falls and ‘cleansed’ with the water from the falls before the picture was taken. Also in the exhibit are cyanotypes of manipulated family photographs mounted on sheets from one of his mother’s scrapbooks that was in the chest.

Kevin Q. Gray is a fine art photographer living in upstate New York. His work spans digital, film, and alternative photographic processes such as dry-plate tintypes, wet-plate photography, and emulsion lifts. He received a BFA in Photography and Painting from Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY, and an MFA in Visual Arts from the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. Much of Kevin’s work is based on nature and the landscape, but he also creates work that explores notions of nostalgia, memory, and history. Kevin lives in Cherry Valley with his wife and a myriad of domesticated animals.
