Our Essential Thursdays Performance Series continues with a trumpet, a trombone and a piano and marks the first of two performances curated by Jungeun Kim, world-renowned pianist, educator and Executive Director of the New York Summer Music Festival.

This evening features endorsed Bach Trumpet artist Nathan Warner, principal trombonist for the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra Samuel Chen on trombone, and multiple national and international competition winner Emi Kagawa on piano.

Nathan Warner won the prestigious Governor’s Scholarship in his second year of playing the trumpet. Warner has performed with Clay Aiken, Alejandro Sanz, Patti Lu-Pone, Olivia Newton-John and The Glenn Miller Orchestra, among others. A champion of music education for inner city youth, Warner taught at St. Mark the Evangelist School in Harlem and worked for the New York Pops Orchestra Outreach.

Samuel Chen began trombone studies at the age of 16, having previously studied cello and euphonium and is the only trombonist to have been a winner in the CIM concerto competition. Chen is principal trombone at the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and serves as a member of the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Knoxville Brass Quintet.

Emi Kagawa on piano has performed throughout the United States, Canada, Italy and Japan as both a soloist and a chamber musician. The Salt Lake Tribune described her performance as “a picture in the form of a 1,000 piece puzzle, with each piece being a master piece.” A winner of numerous national and international competitions, Kagawa has performed at the Weill Recital Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Steinway Hall, among others.
