For the first time in our history, the Roxbury Arts Group will present a classical chamber program in the community of Stamford.

Thapelo Masita earned a Bachelor of Music in cello performance from the Eastman School of Music in Spring 2017 and is currently in a Master of Music degree program at the Juilliard School in New York City. His passion for the community has led him to a fellowship in the Music Advancement Program, a community engagement initiative run by the Juilliard School.

Thapelo began his cello studies at the age of 12 in the Mangaung String Program in his hometown, Bloemfontein. John Minnaar, Tilla Henkins and Dr. Anmari van der Westhuized were his first teachers. He completed high school at the Interlochen Arts Academy, studying with Crispin Campbell. Masita went on to study in the studio of Steven Doane at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester.

In the early stages of his orchestral career, has occupied the position of principal cellist in such ensembles as the Bochabela String Orchestra, Miagi Youth Orchestra, both of which has toured to Europe with. In 2011 Masita, was principal cellist of South African National Youth Orchestra for which he received national honors. Thapelo was invited to perform with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra in a national tour with the World-renowned violinist Sarah Chang and then an international tour of France where he was also invited to perform for the South African Ambassador to France, in Paris, as a celebration of the 95th Birthday of Nelson Mandela.
