One of Panama’s best-known handicrafts is the Mola, intricate reverse-applique handwork made by the Kuna Indians, and now an important symbol of their culture. The source for traditional design inspiration for Molas include the following: natural-world native animals (iguanas, lizards, parrots, fish), local vegetation (palm trees, coconut crops, sea grasses), and the shapes of the coral reefs around the San Blas islands.

This week, our emerging artists will explore the San Blas islands and the traditions of the Kuna Indians before creating their own Mola-inspired artwork.

The projects are best suited for children ages 4-14. All materials will be provided. All participants, and their families, must wear masks when not at their assigned crafting station. The “mask required” area will be roped off and labeled.
