Rug Hooking Workshop with Annie Hayes CANCELLED

Learn how to design and execute your own hooked rug during this two-day workshop. During the first day students will view a slide show of antique and contemporary hooked rugs, discuss the creation of original designs and the hesitance beginners feel, review all tools and supplies, and begin creating their personally designed hooked rug. The second day will show the students more techniques, as well as how to finish their hooked rug. Materials will be provided and students will go home with their hooked rug. Students should bring a lunch each day.
Annie Hayes makes a variety of handmade hooked rugs, for use on the wall or floor, and in upholstered pieces using her personal designs. She has participated in several gallery exhibitions, and her work has been featured in the New York Times, Early Homes, Old-House Interiors, Early American Life’s “Directory of the Best Traditional Craftsmen,” and Kaatskill Life.
Hayes says of her work, “Using hand-dyed and as-is wools, vintage garments from thrift stores, or old clothes given to me by friends, I create one-of-a-kind primitive rugs with themes ranging from animals and country scenes to floral and geometric patterns. I love the imagery and objects of the 19th century and fill notebooks with drawings that are eventually transformed into my rug designs. The joys of primitive rugs are many—exuberant drawing, flat, surprising colors and shapes, and the making-do quality that running out of a color in midstream brings to a rug. I enjoy and appreciate the decorative and utilitarian duality of rugs.”
