I’m Not That Girl… [How I Got From There To Here]

A Cabaret Benefit for the Roxbury Arts Group featuring Marge Helenchild with musical director Tracy Stark

In this coming-out story, Marge Helenchild shares her observations and adventures of her Lesbian journey, from shy mid-west tomboy to proud New York City feminist.

Cabaret is the latest form of artistic expression for Marge Helenchild. She arrived on the arts scene in New York in the early 70’s as a founding member of several visual arts and performance collectives, most notably The Women’s Interart Center and The Soho 20 Feminist Art Gallery. She is in a forthcoming art history book on Soho20.

Also during that time she attended dance, movement, and theater classes at Carnegie Hall Studios, Clark Center for the Performing Arts, and H-B Studios. She was a founding member of; Garden Variety Mime Theater, the musical “Hysterical Herstoricals”, and the Lesbian Terrorist Feminist Comedy Group. More recently she joined the Shock of Gray Theater Collective performing in “Smoke And Mirrors” which played at The Roxbury Arts Group.

In upstate New York at The Open Eye Theater, Marge originated the role of Lucretia Mott in their commissioned musical “Seneca Falls” written by Karen Howe with music by Elliot Sokolov. The story being about the great effort of the prominent women of that time to acquire the women’s right to vote. Marge continues to perform and direct there and recently was project director for the annual ten minute play fest, Summer Shortcuts.

Through the Cabaret Performance Workshops of Helen Baldasarre, Marge found the way to combine and rejuvenate her artistic endeavors and step onto a place she could only imagine but believing it is never too late to create. In 2019 she was nominated for a MAC Best Debut Award show. 

She continues to participate in a variety of cabaret workshops and showcases in popular clubs in NYC, mostly through the Singnasium organization Directed by Lennie Watts. In August of 2022 she became a fellow of the Eugene O’Neill Cabaret Convention.

Joining Marge as musical director is Pianist / Music Director / Arranger / Bandleader / Singer Songwriter Tracy Stark, a 13-Time MAC Award winner in the categories of Music Director, Piano Entertainer, and Song of the Year. She is also a Bistro Award winner for Musical Direction, has won Cabaret Hotline’s Songwriter of the Year Award, and most recently won a Broadway World Award for Music Director, and 2022 MAC Award for Music Director.

Tracy has worked with Sarah Dash (Labelle), Lesley Gore, Phoebe Snow, Karen Black, Nona Hendryx (Labelle), Randy Jones (Village People), Barb Jungr, Brenda Braxton, Justin Sayre, Eric Millegan (Bones), Tonya Pinkins, Nathan Lee Graham, Alice Ripley, and hundreds of other rock, jazz, and broadway vocalists.  

Tracy stays busy creating and music directing 75-100 different shows per year, in addition to her ongoing work as music director for the Eugene O’Neill Cabaret Conference for the past 11 years. She looks forward to music directing the Provincetown Cabaret Festival in 2023.
