David Byrd worked as a night orderly in the psychiatric ward of the VA Hospital in Montrose, NY from 1958 to 1988. This experience provided him with his defining body of paintings. Few other artists have explored the subject of mental illness so completely and with such empathy. This exhibit is inspired by Mr. Byrd’s 180 page book, Montrose VA 1958-1988.
