Night Photography for Beginners

Accomplished night photographer and teaching artist Matt Hill leads a hands-on Night Photography Workshop for Beginners where participants will tackle the fundaments, such as:

• stability
• focusing
• composing
• exposure
• making star point photos
• how to capture star trails (weather permitting)

The workshop will begin with twilight lecture in a field on the Cowbella Farm that will cover the basics of night photography. Following the discussion, participants will put what they learn into practice as they begin working with their cameras.

To attend, participants must:

• know how to use their mirrorless or DSLR camera in manual mode (no automatic settings)
• be able to shoot RAW on your camera is highly suggested (not JPG)
• a memory card with room for about 100 photos
• a tripod* 
• a dim flashlight for looking at your camera settings (white light, not red light)

Matt Hill is a night photographer for over 30 years, a cut paper artist and avid educator. He travels to teach, see the world and enjoy the marriage of the cosmos and landscape. Yet he always comes home to Catskill, where he and his wife Mabel have lived for 8+ years and counting. *If you really desire to attend and do not have a tripod, please contact headwaters@roxburyartsgroup.org as Matt & the Headwaters Arts Center have a few to lend out for eager learners. Your camera must have a 1/4″ 20 thread on the bottom (and nearly 100% of them do, but please check).
