Now it its 4th year, our Essential Thursdays Summer Concert Series has grown in popularity and taken on a life of its own! Great music and great food in the best little acoustic house this side of the Susquehanna, and just when you think it can’t get any better the moon rises over the steeple and leaves you in awe.

Bassoonist Cathryn Gaylord will be joining flutist Thomas J. Wible in a program of wind music, and will be assisted by their Bard colleague Jesse Goldberg on piano. The program is called Romance and Dance; a flavorful and eclectic recital of music for flute, bassoon and piano. Compositions will include music by Beethoven, Corea, Burton, Clarke, and Colquhoun.

iusa_400x400.29620491_9pcwRecipient of the 2005 Vermont All-State Jazz Performance and Scholarship award, Cathryn Gaylord started her collegiate studies as a jazz pianist and finished as a classical bassoonist. Having most recently completed an Advanced Performance Studies certificate at Bard College, she holds degrees from The Hartt School, Mannes College the New School for Music, and Indiana University where she studied with Marc Goldberg and William Ludwig, respectively. In 2012, she received a Fulbright grant to spend a year in Paris where she studied French bassoon style and repertoire with Philippe Hanon of L’Orchestre National de France. In addition to a rigorous performance schedule, Cathryn enjoys teaching at the high school and collegiate levels both privately and in public institutions. Most recently she has held the adjunct bassoon faculty position at Westfield State University in Westfield, MA. She currently serves as an assistant faculty member at the Juilliard School Precollege Program in New York City.

Jesse Bio PictureJesse Goldberg, age 21, graduated from Bard College in 2015 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Literature, Anthropology, and Music — her emphasis in this last field was collaborative piano. Currently studying in the Bard Conservatory’s Advanced Performance Studies program, Jesse will receive an artist’s certificate in Collaborative Piano studies May of 2017. Jesse’s first collaborative endeavors began in Italy, where she accompanied her high school choir in several Italian churches, including the Vatican. She was awarded a medal for “Best Accompanist” while playing for the same choir in the US “Music in the Parks” competition in 2009. She was also the recipient of the 2014 Shafer Award for Performance awarded by Joan Tower, and the recipient of the 2015 Richard M. Siegel award given to a music student who demonstrates academic excellence. During the summer of 2011 she attended the festival Elezear de Carvalo in Forteleza, Brazil as an accompanist, and during the summer of 2014 was the rehearsal piano intern at the Bard Music Festival as they prepared their performance of Euryanthe. While at Bard, Jesse has accompanied undergraduate and graduate vocalists and musicians, played celesta with The Orchestra Now, played for the local high school and middle school choirs, accompanied local Suzuki violin classes, and accompanies at the Mannes preparatory division—where she first discovered her love of chamber music in 2005. She currently studies with Erika Switzer and Frank Corliss.

Founded in 2015, The Orchestra Now is an innovative training orchestra and master’s degree program at Bard College that is preparing a new generation of musicians to break down barriers between modern audiences and great orchestral music of the past and present. Under the leadership of conductor, educator, and music historian Leon Botstein, TŌN mines the wealth of underperformed repertoire, reimagines traditional concert formats, and strives to make the experience of the performers a part of the listeners’ experience. At a TŌN concert, musicians and audience inspire one another, each following their curiosity with a shared sense of adventure.

The Ate.O.Ate Gourmet Catering Truck will be on site serving dinner before the performance. Visit ateoatecatering.com for the evening’s menu choices.
