July 19 – Drop In Art Class: Catskill Vistas

We regret to inform you that due to circumstances beyond our control this event has been canceled.

11:15 am – 2:00 pm
Roxbury Arts Center
$30 per person, includes all materials.

Get inspired by working with different mediums, subjects, and teaching artists at this new Roxbury Arts Group program. Beginning and experienced artists are welcomed.

This month’s workshop, led by landscape artist and plein air painter Richard Kathamnn, will allow artists to capture the beauty of the Catskill Vistas that surround us using their own artistic voices.

This workshop builds on the experience artists had at Richard’s last workshop, and new artists are welcomed to participate.

Artistic exercises include:

  • In pencil (or pen or marker) on small sheets of paper we describe a landscape vista in five lines, learning to represent and abstract principal forms and deep space.
  • In black and white acrylic paint, we mix five grays and describe the major forms within our landscape view.
  • In black and white acrylic paint we add two more grays to our palette, making in seven grays a long view of the mountains and sky on folded accordion pages, like a Chinese scroll painting.

Working en plein air within easy driving distance of RAG, we’ll assemble at Walt Meade Gallery at 11:15 a.m., distribute drawing and painting supplies, and travel to our work site. In event of bad weather we’ll work inside at RAG from landscape photographs, doing the same exercises.  Bring your favorite Katskill Life or your own photographs to work from.

Paper, pencils, pens, markers, acrylic paint, and brushes will be provided. Oil painters who have their own gear may choose to work in that medium.

About the teaching artist: Richard Kathamnn works plein air in the Catskill forests, on the Atlantic shore in Massachusetts and Maine, and in New Mexico. His landscape drawings and paintings have been exhibited at The Hyde Collection (Glens Falls) and at The Albany Institute of History and Art. In June 2012 Kathmann took part in the renowned painting marathon, “Arbor Vitae,” at Old Westbury Garden, presented by the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture. Kathmann trained at the University of Chicago, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Pratt Institute. He currently lives in his saphouse studio on the dairy farm, no longer active, in East Meredith NY.
