The Roxbury Arts Group invites the public to the Opening Reception of “Do You Read Me?”, a new exhibit curated by Beth Caspar of work that uses text in forms that aren’t meant to be read in the conventional sense, literally can’t be read, or are contextually ambiguous, in the Walt Meade Gallery at the Roxbury Arts Center, 5025 Vega Mountain Road, on Saturday, January 18, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Along with a separate artist talk on Saturday February 15 at 2:00pm. A group exhibit, works in this exhibition include books that can’t be opened or even accessed, and letters and words that can’t be read in a way that makes sense, causing the route to engagement with the work to be abandoned and a different one discovered and employed. The Opening Reception and visits to the Walt Meade Gallery are always free and open to all.

“The familiarity of words and the expectations of language have been turned on their head, challenging the viewer to experience the images and objects as something other than narrative and simply engage with the formal elements that comprise them and/or the irony they convey” describes Beth Caspar, curator and exhibiting artist of Do You Read Me? “The ‘vocabulary’ one encounters is a visual one comprised of pattern, shape, color, texture, tonality, and materiality. And any message conveyed by it is best experienced not in a linear way but as something more akin to a gestalt or Zen koan.”

“Visual art has a gift of crossing language barriers” says Samantha Nick, Grants & Community Coordinator for the Roxbury Arts Group. “The fact this exhibit challenges language yet again by using text to create visual art exposes a contrast between the two, being both jarring and complimentary.”

Artists whose work is included in the upcoming Do You Read Me? exhibit include: Beth Caspar, John Huddleston, Tamiko Kawata, Hedi Kyle, Judy Linn and Wanda Siedlecka.

Artists will be present at the Opening Reception on Saturday, January 18, at 3:00 p.m. and an artist talk on Saturday February 15 at 2:00pm at the Roxbury Arts Center, located at 5025 Vega Mountain Road. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday 10:00 a.m.– 3:00 p.m. and by appointment, through February 15.
