June 19, 2022 @ 11:00 am 4:00 pm

Explore the meditative and mesmerizing art of Japanese Marbling at the Headwaters Arts Center on June 18th and 19th! This weekend workshop features the ancient Japanese marbling technique Suminagashi, which means “floating ink”.

In this workshop, makers will get familiar with the process of floating inks on water and transferring their intricate designs onto paper or cloth.

Participants will be using the same marbling process used in some of the earliest preserved Suminagashi samples that date back to the 12th century!

Participants will experiment throughout the weekend, creating completely unique samples and finished pieces. The same marbling pattern is never achieved twice, making for an awe-inspiring experience.

About the Teaching Artist: Chris Christman is a marbling artist and for years has been marbling silk in his Brooklyn studio and creating one of a kind wearable art, stationery, and home accessories.  Using traditional marbling techniques with a contemporary twist, he creates combinations of color and design that are printed only once making every piece created unique. You can view his work on his website BrooklynMarbling.com.
