Andrea Burgay “Everything Coming Together and Falling Apart”

“Everything Coming Together and Falling Apart” is an exhibition that explores memory, the passage of time, destruction and renewal. Andrea Burgay continually adds and removes layers of materials to create collages with fragments of color, texture and drawing element from images, wall paper, handmade paper and painted papers. This exhibit will be on display at the Roxbury Arts Center at 5025 Vega Mountain Rd, Roxbury from July 9, 2022 through August 20, 2022. An Artist Reception will be held on Saturday, July 9, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm when members of the public are invited to attend, meet the artist, and learn more about the work. The Artist Reception and visits to the Walt Meade Gallery are always free and open to all.
The works in this exhibition are resigned to aging and decay, but convey hopefulness in their ability to hold together and metamorphose in the face of entropy. They invite the viewer to reflect on their own relationship to the passage of time, and the painful aspects of their experiences, and move towards integration of life’s complex cycles.
Exhibit open through August 20. Gallery closed Sunday and Monday.

Andrea Burgay Artist Statement
Everything Coming Together and Falling Apart presents collage-based works from three series that explore memory, the passage of time, destruction and renewal. In these works, transformative processes reconstruct and revive castoff materials to give them new life in the present.
The Requiems series (All That’s Prophesied, The Gift and Storms) explores the idea that in order to move forward we have to excavate the past. These works reconstruct places and experiences from my personal history through the lens of memory, emotion and imagination. Images and collage clippings from my archived collection are combined with found wallpaper samples and handmade and painted papers. The Requiems integrate the pain of past griefs, loss and trauma with what fragments of beauty still remain.
Works from the Ruins (Already Happened and Never Going Back Again) and Fictions: Bindings and Un-Bindings (The Seeds of Time and Miles and Miles) series reimagine the potential of discarded books, posters and printed ephemera. Torn and reassembled fragments of colors and textures become drawing elements. The works are impulsive, unplanned explorations—emotional and psychological responses to moments in time. The cast-off materials become vehicles for new expressions, exploring realms of nostalgia and evolution.
Through continually adding and removing layers of materials—repeatedly deconstructing and reassembling, destroying and transforming—the process used to create these works is analogous to natural cycles of creation, decay and rebirth. Layers of materials reference accumulation, things forgotten, covered over, records of trials and mistakes. The resulting works bear the markings of their visceral transformations and make visually manifest the passage of time.

Andrea Burgay Biography
Andrea Burgay is a visual artist from Syracuse, NY, living and working in Brooklyn, NY. Her work combines collage, painting, sculpture and found materials to elevate the overlooked and the mundane via transformative processes. By adding and removing layers of handmade and collected materials, her collage works present a physical manifestation of the passage of time through cycles of destruction and renewal.
Burgay has exhibited nationally and internationally including; Unimedia Modern Contemporary Art (Genoa, Italy), Galerie Zurcher (Paris, France) and Retroavangarda Gallery (Warsaw, Poland). Exhibitions in the US include Concord Visual Arts Center (MA), Stone Valley Arts (VT), The Lockwood Gallery, Denise Bibro, BRIC and Trestle galleries (all NY). She is a recipient of a number of awards and residencies including, Jentel Artist Residency, Banner, WY, The Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, Nebraska City, NE, The Eileen S Kaminsky Family Foundation at MANA Contemporary in Jersey City, NJ and a fellowship and solo exhibition at A.I.R. Gallery, Brooklyn. Her solo exhibition Mining the Ruins: The Library was shown at Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, MI in 2019.
Burgay is also founder and editor of Cut Me Up, a participatory collage magazine and curatorial project. Each issue presents a curated selection of original mixed-media artworks, intended for readers to deconstruct and transform into new artworks in response to curatorial calls addressing contemporary issues.
